The Last Drop

Cocktail Bar | Edinburgh | Scotland | United Kingdom

Traditional scottish pub culture

"The Last Drop" in Edinburgh, Scotland, is a traditional cocktail bar, but it is primarily known as a classic pub located in the heart of the vibrant Grassmarket area. While the term "cocktail bar" is used in the request, the emphasis of this establishment is less on extravagant cocktails and more on an authentic pub experience with a strong focus on traditional drinks such as real ales, whiskies, and gins. Nevertheless, the bar offers an atmosphere that appeals to both connoisseurs of quality beverages and lovers of Scottish culture.

Authentic cocktail bar in edinburgh

The name "The Last Drop" refers to the grim history of the Grassmarket, which was once a central location for public executions in Edinburgh. Condemned individuals would have their last drink here before being hanged just a few steps away—a tradition that gave the pub its name. This historical connection is subtly acknowledged inside, without creating a gloomy atmosphere. Instead, guests are welcomed by a cozy, traditional ambiance featuring dark wooden furnishings, warm lighting, and a touch of Scottish charm that attracts both tourists and locals alike.

The drink selection is a central part of the experience at "The Last Drop." The bar is known for its extensive range of cask ales—hand-pumped beers that have matured in casks, providing an authentic taste. They take particular pride in the local Scottish ales, which change regularly and come from some of the best breweries in the region. For spirit lovers, there is an impressive collection of whiskies, including single malts from various Scottish regions, as well as a selection of British and craft gins served with high-quality mixers. Although cocktails are not the main focus, the bar does offer simple, classic mixed drinks that complement the offering—such as a gin and tonic with one of the many gin varieties or a whisky-based drink.

Scottish whiskies and ales

Culinary-wise, "The Last Drop" stays true to classic pub tradition and offers a selection of hearty dishes that pair perfectly with a pint or a dram of whisky. Particularly popular are the homemade pies, such as the traditional Scotch pie or the version with haggis, neeps, and tatties, served with a rich gravy. Fish and chips are also a favorite, featuring crispy fried fish and thick, golden fries. For vegetarians, there are options like the cauliflower and kale veggie burger, which also receives much praise. The food is uncomplicated yet of high quality, with a focus on regional ingredients that highlight Scottish flavors.

Lively atmosphere in edinburgh

The atmosphere at "The Last Drop" is lively and inviting, especially on weekends when the pub is often bustling. In the summer, the outdoor area opens up, offering views of the Grassmarket and nearby Edinburgh Castle, making it an ideal spot to enjoy the surroundings. The bar attracts a diverse mix of visitors—from tourists exploring the old town to regulars who appreciate the relaxed vibe. The staff is known for their friendliness and helpfulness, ensuring that guests feel welcome even when it gets busy. Two televisions also provide the opportunity to watch sports broadcasts like football matches, enhancing the pub atmosphere.

"The Last Drop" is part of the Nicholson's Pub chain, known for its historic buildings and focus on British hospitality. This affiliation is reflected in the careful maintenance of the traditional character, without sacrificing modernity. It is a place that keeps history alive—whether through its name or classic decor—while also serving as a gathering spot for social hours. During the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August, it becomes particularly lively, yet it remains a place where one can find a moment of peace despite the crowds.

Ortam keyifli. Ekstra Cranachan denedim diğer yerlerde 8 iken orada 7 pound tu fakat böyle tatlılar sevmeme rağmen bana çok yağlı geldi.

We popped in here for a rest and drinks during a visit to Edinburgh. We had planned to return for dinner (based on reading reviews) but after our visit for drinks, we were put off and didn't come back. My husband ordered two soft drinks for us (it was mid afternoon and we just wanted refreshment, not alcohol) and the member of bar staff instantly asked, rather abruptly "they're not for under 18s are they?" We are far from 18 and had no children with us. He said she seemed very "off" and borderline reluctant to serve the soft drinks. Very strange. In addition, the pub didn't really have much of an atmosphere. It felt like a basic chain pub. The history around it is interesting but otherwise not really worth visiting. The food looked average too - we found far better places.
